Writing contests, usually 1,500–3,000 words, on a clinical topic, a research finding, or an ethical problem. Judges score the argument, the evidence, and whether the essay adds something.

Who organises medical essay competitions?

Royal colleges, societies, and journals. That includes the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Surgeons, the BMA, and specialty societies such as the British Cardiovascular Society and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Why do medical essay competitions matter?

Deadlines run through the year, with a cluster in autumn and spring. Expect a word limit (often 1,500–3,000), a set format, and original unpublished work. Some ask for a reference or a conflict-of-interest declaration.

What types of medical essay competitions exist?

National student prizes, specialty prizes, ethics contests, and evidence reviews. Common themes are clinical innovation, patient care, education, ethics, and global health.
