The idea came from a real gap. Stepping off the conventional medical career path used to depend on luck. Guidance was thin, and most opportunities only reached students through personal connections or whatever a particular university happened to promote. Baker has described the idea starting from a late-night conversation after exams, when the pair realised how little visibility there was for varied, fulfilling careers in medicine.
The demand for that kind of guidance shows up in the numbers. A 2023 study of UK medical students, which surveyed 10,486 people, found that of the 8,806 students who planned to complete both years of their Foundation training, 21.11% intended to take a non-training clinical role afterwards, such as a junior clinical fellowship, a teaching fellowship, or locum work.
The prize layer those paths still need
Choosing an unconventional career path does not remove the need to compete for training posts, academic roles, or funded projects, and those still reward prizes, presentations, and published work. The problem is that most medical prizes sit scattered across royal college pages, individual society websites, and university lists that students rarely think to check. More Than Medics identified this same access problem when it comes to career opportunities. The same gap exists for prizes and awards.

The lasting value here is the listing itself, not the campaign that introduced it. A promotional push fades within days. A permanent board entry keeps sending students back to the database in the weeks when application deadlines actually fall.
Tens of thousands of views, one campaign
Rather than each organisation promoting its own product, they promoted each other's mission. The More Than Medics video post on Instagram opened by naming the problem, that there was no single place to find medical grants, essay competitions, and prizes, before introducing the partnership. Prizology did the reverse on its own channels, describing More Than Medics' work on career access and portfolio careers rather than showing off its own search bar. Together, the two campaigns reached tens of thousands of views.
Neither organisation is treating views as the real outcome. What matters is that a student arriving from either community lands on a shortlist filtered by specialty and stage, with real deadlines attached, instead of a list of organiser names they still have to search individually.
Opening the door to other communities
This kind of partnership is not limited to one organisation. A trusted student community gets a direct route into a verified prize database, and Prizology sends its own users back the other way to discover that community's own resources. The sequence for a student stays the same regardless of which side they arrive from: create an account, filter opportunities by type and stage, bookmark the ones worth entering, then confirm eligibility and the deadline on the organiser's own page before applying, since listings can occasionally lag behind changes an organiser makes.
